Our
Comments: Explain
you are vegan when ordering and you can have vegetable
curry or vegetable stir fry (say no Worcester sauce). If
you give them notice they could possibly do a vegan
lasagne.
Can provide vegan food
but probably best to give some notice.

Chinese Takeaway
Understand veganism,
don't do bean curd but can do vegetable fried rice with no egg and
many vegetable dishes can be adapted to vegan if you explain your
requirements.
Our
Comments:
The food is freshly prepared, so they can cater for vegans if informed. The chips are cooked
separately from the meat. The staff are friendly and helpful. If you give advance notice they will provide a good,
imaginative 3-course meal, such as soup, nicely presented roast dinner and passion fruit & mango vegan cheesecake.
It is best to go when it is quite quiet and avoid hectic times such as Sunday lunch. It seems like a country pub, even though it’s only a couple of miles from Cardiff. Recommended by our researchers if you give advance notice.
Location:
Take
the road from Tongwynlais past Castell Coch through a mile
or so of woods. It’s just past a golf club.
Our
Comments: Serve
a full labelled vegetarian/vegan menu designed by Kathryn,
a vegan who works at the restaurant. The suitable dishes
are:
Spinach,
mushroom & chickpea curry served with rice and/or
chips and mango chutney.
Bean
chilli served with rice and/or chips.
Garlic
mushrooms cooked in olive oil or roasted Mediterranean
vegetables served on toasted ciabatta or jacket
potatoes, drizzled with
Balsamic vinegar or sweet chilli sauce, served with salad
(dressing is vegan) and coleslaw (vegan on request).
The
creamy mushroom and thyme pie can be adapted to vegan
using oil and soya milk instead of the normal dairy
products. The pie lids are vegan. Inform the staff you are
vegan if you order this.
Breakfast
menu will cater for vegans if you ask for mushrooms, fried
potatoes, baked beans, grilled tomatoes and toast with
vegan spread.
They also
stock soya milk, vegan hot chocolate and vegan ice cream.
The toasted teacakes and complementary biscuits served
with hot drinks are also suitable.
On
Sundays the nut roast is vegan, so you can have a Sunday
dinner. Normally the roast potatoes, mashed potatoes and
cabbage are not vegan but they will prepare them suitably
if given prior notice.
The food
is good, the staff friendly and helpful and it is well
worth a visit for vegans.

There are vegetarian
options on the A La Carte menu, some of which are vegan friendly. If
you let them know about your dietary needs when you book they are
happy to accommodate your specific tastes.
Our
Comments: The website notes that because all the dishes are
freshly prepared they can easily cater for vegans. There
are always at least two vegetarian starters and
vegetarian mains on offer.
Location:
On the crossroads in Draethen, which is a village
near Machen.
Our
Comments: The
suitable starters are: Breaded garlic mushrooms, mini
spring rolls, samosas and battered onion rings.
The vegan mains are: Mushroom risotto with porcini
mushrooms, nut roast and pasta with tomato & basil
sauce.
They can also prepare vegan curry, chilli, fajitas,
enchiladas, tacos or vegetable pies and usually have
soya burgers and sausages in the freezer.
Desserts are a bit trickier but usually have fresh fruit
and always have frozen blackberries, winberries and
stewed apples so they can prepare a fruit pie with a
puff pastry crust.
Location:
On the outskirts of Rhymney, close to the Heads
of the Valleys Road.
Our
Comments: Offer
Welsh, Mediterranean and Italian menus. For vegans they
can do a pasta dish or risotto. If you explain you are
vegan, the staff seem to understand.
Our
Comments: The
homemade nut roast or lentil roast on the menu is suitable
for vegans. They can also do a vegetable curry which is
ok. With advance warning they will prepare a dish made to
your own recipe.
Usually cook with
vegetable oil but sometimes use butter. Explain you are vegan when
ordering, they can adapt dishes or tell you which are already
suitable.
