Our Comments: Totally
vegetarian cafe. Eat in or take away. It is run by some great Krishnas and is
very relaxed.
The vegan dishes are the Atma special (spiced
vegetables, dahl, rice & salad), veggie burger, chapati wrap and
samosa's.
There are also suitable cakes including vegan cheesecake,
the flavours varying from day to day.
They
stock soya milk for hot drinks and several flavours of smoothie.
The
food is super tasty and healthy. Strongly recommended but
local vegan Dave does warn of possible cheesecake addiction.
Our
Comments: Totally vegetarian café with plenty
of vegan options. Homemade, organic and fair trade kind of
stuff. From noon there are soups and a main meal, which
changes dally. The soup is always vegan or can be adapted
and the main meal is often vegan or can be adapted. If you
want to make certain there’s a vegan option available, you
can ring the day before.
There are always white and wholemeal organic baguettes,
homemade bread sandwiches and bagels. They use vegan Pure
spread. Fillings include houmus, tofu ((not always
available), roast peppers, sundried tomatoes, jalapenos,
olives,
grated carrot etc. So there is always something to make an
interesting vegan sandwich.
They do their best to always have a vegan cake available.
Soya milk is stocked and usually soya yogurt, to go with
granola, cake or soup. Until 11.30am there are breakfasts of
toast with homemade marmalade or jam and granola.
Location:
Near
Cardiff University, very close to the Woodville pub.
Our
Comments: Nice
little cafe with friendly staff who understand veganism.
Their
website has a note about vegans stating they always strive
to have dishes on the menu which are suitable for a vegan
diet. If you don't fancy their choices, they are more than
happy to make something to your liking.
They have
a very good selection of hot drinks including soya milk
coffees & hot chocolate and delicious vegan chais.
Location:
At
the top end of Crwys Road, near Cathays Library.
Our Comments: The lentil soup is vegan, as is the homemade
falafel wrap with salsa and salad (ask for no
yoghurt). They can also do a vegan breakfast but
without veggie sausages, as they contain egg, and
salads.
The
falafel are good and it is a nice place with friendly
staff. Unfortunately there is no soya milk.
Location:
Midway
between the Co-op and the library on Crwys Road.
Our
Comments:
They do baguettes and filled pittas.
The falafel, houmous, baba ganoush, tabbouleh and vine
leaves are all vegan. Tell them you are vegan to avoid
butter on baguettes and cheese in salad. They do a vegan
dessert made from filo pastry and pistachio nuts. Take away
available. Staff are friendly and very helpful.
Location:
Opposite
Gassy Jacks on Salisbury Road, which is near the University.
Our
Comments: There are 14 coffee shops and cyber
cafés and 3 restaurants across the campus. Opening times
are available on their website. The restaurants offer
vegan options and the cafés have salads and a humous &
vegetable sandwich suitable for vegans. The cafes do not
have soya milk.
Our
Comments: The vegan options are Bean Chilli Tacos, Bean
Chilli Tostadas, Vegetable Chilli with rice, Vegetarian
Fajitas and Vegetarian Paella. Remember to tell them you
are vegan when ordering, so they don’t add cheese or
sour cream to your meal.
Location:
Bang in the middle of studentland. Near the
University and very close to Gassy Jacks pub.
Number
of Vegan dishes:
Quite a few main
combinations possible + 3 sides
Price:
Mains £3.95-£4.95
Sides £2.50
Our
Comments: Bar
obviously aimed at the huge student market in Cathays. The
food menu is heavily influenced by Wok to Walk, well to be
honest, they have practically ripped it off word for word.
This is probably a good thing from a vegan perspective and
the staff are good at telling you what is suitable.
For
those unaware of the Wok to Walk system, it is basically
Chinese food where you choose a base, main ingredient and
sauce. The udon noodle, rice noodle, rice and veggie
medley bases are all vegan and can be had with either tofu
or mixed vegetables. The suitable sauces are sweet &
sour, teriyaki, hot Asia and Oriental style peanut. The
50p optional extras of various veggies or cashew nuts are
suitable too.
The
Schezeun and Kung-Po noodle-boxes can also be prepared
vegan. The vegetarian sides of vegetable spring rolls,
tempura vegetables and sweet potato & sesame cakes are
all vegan as well.
Location:
On
Woodville Road, close to the junction with Basil Place.
Our
Comments:
As everything they cook is made fresh to order on the
night, they can accommodate vegans. The pizza bases are
vegan so pizzas without cheese are an option. There is
suitable pasta, so pasta dishes are also available and
they only use olive oil. The head chef may be able to
come up with something that it is not on the menu.
Three of our researchers turned up here, without notice,
quite late on a busy Saturday night armed with their own
Redwood Super Melting Cheezly, Lorenza’s cooked them a
very good pizza with the vegan cheese on without any
problem.
Recommended.
Location:
At the top of Crwys Road,
very near the junction with Cathays Terrace, Whitchurch
Road and Fairoak Road.
Our
Comments:
The vegan
mezza are: Hummus, Moutabbl, Tabboule, Fattoush, Warak Enab,
Lebanese Salad, Bamieh and Falafel. The vegan mains are:
Vegetarian Couscous, Dolma (without yogurt) and Veggie Club
(without cheese). Tell them you are vegan as some dishes
need to be adapted. They have many vegan customers.
Our
Comments: All veggie boxes are suitable for vegans. These are the
Gung-Ho, Tokyo, Veggie Soba and Yakuza boxes. The three
soup boxes (Luksa, Ramen Soup and Kare Noodle) are also
suitable if you choose tofu. To go with your box, the rice
and udon noodles are the vegan ones. Of the side orders vegetarian gyoza, tempura
vegetables, veggie spring rolls and probably others are
vegan. Noodle box is good on the knowing what is vegan
thing, so just ask. Home delivery available (£1.25 charge) to most of Cardiff.
Our
Comments: There are a few beancurd and vegetable dishes on the menu. If you tell
them you are vegan they will cook things that are not on
the menu including mock meat dishes. Home delivery
available. 10% student discount.
Our
Comments:
Explain to them you are vegan and do not eat meat, egg
or fish. There are suitable bean curd and vegetable
dishes. Mostly the bean curd options do not contain egg,
but it is best to make sure. The Fried Bean Curd Thai
Style starter
and the Vegetarian Singapore Rice Noodles and Mixed
Vegetable Chow Mein (with rice noodles) noodle dishes
can be served vegan. Of the vegetarian dishes the
following are among those that can be vegan: Vegetarian
“Ma Po” Bean Curd,
Vegetarian Trio in Black Bean Sauce, Deep Fried Bean
Curd with Chilli & Garlic and Seasonal Chinese
Vegetables in Garlic Sauce. Check other dishes with the
staff. Portions are very generous.
Location:
Woodville
Road runs between Crwys Road and the bottom of Cathays
Terrace.
Pizza bases vegan. Put
egg mayo in the tomato topping but will replace topping with barbecue
sauce for vegans.
