Our
Comments:
The
following vegan items are available to take away from
the fridge: Large vegetarian sausage roll, roast
vegetable, Caribbean, wholemeal vegetable & vegetable
curry pasties and vegan carrot cake.
Location:
A
few doors up from the St Mary St entrance to Cardiff
Indoor Market.
Our
Comments: Very
centrally located sandwich, baguette and coffee
take-away. They have a labelled vegan baguettes and
serve Redwood Cheatin’ ham & chicken, Linda McCartney
sausages and other vegan options as fillings. They also
stock soya milk. However a vegetarian former worker has
informed us there are serious cross contamination
issues. To balance this out regular vegan visitors say
the owner and some of the staff are excellent in
ensuring the food served is vegan.
Location:
On
the corner of High Street in Cardiff City centre, opposite
the main entrance to Cardiff Castle.
Our
Comments: Pizzeria which actually provides vegan cheese. Ask for it instead of whatever cheese(s) are normally on the pizza. Bases are obviously
OK.Run
by the lovely people who used to run Piccolo Palermo in
Heath, this is the only place in Wales where you can buy a
pizza topped with vegan cheese.Take-away
is 20% off but is collection only. Drinks
with soya milk available. We would strongly recommend you
go there.
Our
Comments: The tapas menu, served until
10pm has the following vegan choices: Hummus with red
peppers,Sweet potato fritter with salsa, Balsamic
aubergines. The chefs are happy to alter other dishes on
this menu and the other menus so they are suitable for
vegans. On the daytime bar menu and evening menu the
suitable options are salads, soups and an antipasto dish.
Location:
Just off St Mary Street, near the church.
Our
Comments:
Although they do not actually have a
vegan pizza on the menu, it is possible to create your
own from ingredients they have in the kitchen. The pizza
bases and sauce are vegan and all pizzas are made to
order and can be ordered without cheese. Always explain
to the staff you are vegan. They are also able to tailor
other dishes to be suitable.
The following sides and starters are also vegan:
Marinated Olives, rosemary and sea salt bread (with
olive oil or olive depend), brushetta classico, rustic
chips, roasted new charlotte potatoes and mixed salad.
The sorbetti mango dessert is vegan.
There is also an Ask in Swansea..
Location:
The corner
of Wyndham Arcade and Mill Lane.
Our
Comments: The
Tomato & Roasted Garlic Bruschetta and Spicy Bean Burger
are vegan. There are also several things on the menu
that can be altered slightly for a vegan diet, if they
are made aware such as Salads, Portobello Mushroom
Burger, Doorstop & Grape Selection Sandwiches and Oven
Roasted Vegetable Panini.
Our
Comments: Tell
them you are vegan. The pizza bases are vegan so you can
have the Marinara pizza which comes without cheese or the patate or vegetariana if you ask for them without cheese.
The antipasto bruschetta and the following pasta dishes
are suitable for vegans if you explain beforehand:
Linguine aglio e olio, penne Napoli, penne vegetariane and
penne arrabbiata.
With
a proper wood burning pizza oven, this is a nice intimate
little place with friendly helpful staff. You might fancy
getting some vegan ‘cheese’ from the nearby Beanfreaks
health food shop for them to cook on your pizza.
Location:
Opposite Harvester, near St John’s
church in Cardiff city centre.
Our
Comments: Most of the dishes contain
butter and/or parmesan. You can have brushcetta al
pomodoro as a starter and linguine alla puttanesca as a
main. All the wines they sell are fined with egg protein
but at least they are aware this is not suitable for
vegans. The staff are very helpful and understand
veganism. If you tell them you are vegan on arrival they
are perfectly happy to amend any dish they can, so you do
have a pretty good choice even on the set lunch menu. The
food is very good. Recommended.
Location:
Between
Westgate Street and High Street.
Our
Comments: Three
vegan options provided for filled jacket potatoes: Baked
beans, hummus and three bean chilli. Ask for the jacket
without butter and tell them you are vegan, they will give
you a pot of chutney instead of coleslaw as a garnish.
They also do soya milk. The teas are really nice.
Unfortunately a lot of the chairs are leather which is not
brilliant but the staff are lovely and friendly and it
doesn't feel like one of the big chain coffee shops.
The
vegan options are a direct result of a customer informing
the owner of the benefit in providing vegan choices. Well
done to Coffee Barker and vegan customer Alys for this.
Location:
At
the back of the Barker clothes shop in Castle Arcade.

Our Comments: An old city centre
pub serving two vegan dishes. These are Vegetable
Jalfrezi (without the naan bread) and Mixed Pulse
Chilli. It has a nice atmosphere and the staff are
pretty good on knowing what is vegan.
Our
Comments:
Serve vegan milkshakes made with organic soya milk and

ingredients such as fruit, chocolate, sweets and
biscuits. Tell them you are vegan and they can inform

provide vegan milkshakes made with soya milk and

chocolate or sweets, but very few of the non-fruit
options are vegan.

Our Comments:
They have several dishes that can be made
vegan and they advise you to tell the manager on duty that
you’re vegan to ensure your dietary requirements are
met.
From
the lunch menu there are sweet corn cakes or any soup for
starters(if
Tom Yam just ask them not to add any carnation milk). For
mains you could have Pad Thai without egg and most of the
stir fry dishes with a little tailoring. Most of the
noodles are rice noodles and do not contain egg.
Our
Comments:
Nationwide Asian noodle bar chain with only two
restaurants in Wales, both in the capital. Their website
has a dietary requirements section which includes vegan.
This explains which dishes are vegan or can be modified
to be
suitable and informs you to speak to your server and
tell them you are vegan before ordering.
The suitable sides are Raw Salad and Miso Soup &
Japanese Style Pickles.
The vegan mains are the ramen, Saien Soba, the noodle
dishes, Yasai Yaki Soba (no egg), Yasai Chilli Men &
Yasai Itame and the rice dish Yasai Cha Han (no egg).
Take out is available. There is also a restaurant in
Cardiff Bay.
Location:
On
the ground floor of the central library.
Number
of Vegan dishes:
Quite a few combinations
possible
Price:
Base around £4.50
Extras around 65p-£1.40 each
Our
Comments: Choose
between rice, noodles or mixed vegetables for your base.
Make sure you ask for no egg. Add what you fancy out of
tofu, pineapple, shitake mushrooms, bamboo shoots, baby
corn, broccoli, chinese cabbage or peanuts. Then you
choose a free sauce from teriyaki, sweet & sour, curry
coconut, hot, garlic & black pepper or oriental peanut
sauce. They cook it in front of you.
Location:
On St Mary Street, near the
corner with Wood Street.
Our
Comments: All the beers, which are
brewed on the premises, are vegan. Fossilised kelp is used
to clear the beer, as opposed to the fish products used by
many breweries. They will adapt the menu to cater for
vegans. It is a mainly Italian style menu featuring dishes
such as pizza, pasta, risotto, bruschetta etc.The dough balls are vegan but ask for them with
just chilli oil and no butter.
Location:
On Westgate Street, opposite the Millennium
Stadium.
Our
Comments:
The only one
of this Italian restaurant chain situated in Wales. The
pizza bases are vegan, so you can have pizzas without
cheese. The olives and bruschetta al pomodoro starters and
the Tuscan potatoes, fine green beans, roasted
vegetables & mixed leaves sides are also suitable. The
sorbets are dairy free but check they do not contain egg.
Location:
High Street is
located opposite Cardiff Castle in the city centre.
Check the homemade soup

toasted crusty bread. Also teacakes with jam. Ask for no butter.
Pizza bases (inc.
gluten free) & pizza sauce are vegan so pizzas without cheese are

The Thai House, 3-5
Guilford Crescent
This Thai restaurant
has been visited by one of our researchers. Their conclusion was that
they were not too interested in catering for vegans, the staff did not
understand veganism and food ordered as vegan probably was not.
Definitely one to avoid.
